Falls Prevention
FALLS ARE THE LEADING CAUSE OF FATAL AND NON-FATAL INJURIES FOR OLDER AMERICANS.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
- One in four Americans aged 65+ falls each year.
- Every 11 seconds, an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall; every 19 minutes, an older adult dies from a fall.
- Falls are the leading cause of fatal injury and the most common cause of nonfatal trauma-related hospital admissions among older adults.
- Falls result in more than 2.8 million injuries treated in emergency departments annually, including over 800,000 hospitalizations and more than 27,000 deaths.
- In 2015, the total cost of fall injuries was $50 billion. Medicare and Medicaid shouldered 75% of these costs.
- The financial toll for older adult falls is expected to increase as the population ages and may reach $67.7 billion by 2020.
Falls, with or without injury, also carry a heavy quality of life impact. A growing number of older adults fear to fall and, as a result, limit their activities and social engagements. This can result in further physical decline, depression, social isolation, and feelings of helplessness.
HERE's THE TRUTH ABOUT FALLS (WITH STORY)
Sally was 82 years old when it happened. She was going out back to weed her indian Mallow.
Sometimes the oak will spring up in the flower beds. Only this time it wasn’t normal.
Her shoe slipped where the flower bed meets the grass, the dew made it moist.
Sally lied there for almost 12 hours until her neighbor faintly heard her dry voice.
Although I changed the name, this is a true story.
According to WHO Falls is the number 2 cause of accidental or unintentional death in the world. (WHO, 2012)
Each year 646,000 people die from falls globally. (WHO 2019)
Adults 65 years and older suffer the greatest number of falls (WHO,2019)
Every second a senior (65+) falls in the United States. (CDC, 2018)
95% of hip fractures are caused by falling sideways.
At least 300,000 older adults fall each year, ¾ of which are women (CDC, 2018)
I’ve heard many like it.
That’s why we’ve developed this fall group for proactive people like you.
We can’t stop every fall. But, we can do our best to reduce how many you’re having and reduce the overall impact of those falls.
Women, especially those with osteoporosis (Brittle bones) and osteopenia (weakening bones) that love to be active will especially love this group.
