Improving Chronic Illness
There are illnesses that we contract that will never go away. That doesn’t mean that they can’t be improved.
Some 133 million people—almost half of all Americans—live with a chronic condition such as diabetes, heart disease, depression or asthma.
That number is expected to swell to 171 million by 2030 as the population ages.
Chronic conditions require ongoing management, but most health care systems are not set up to provide this kind of care.
Rushed practitioners often fail to follow well-tested practice guidelines and coordinate their care with other providers.
Patients do not get the training they need to take more responsibility for their health.
And too often, there is no active follow-up once patients are no longer on hospital and outpatient treatment plans.

Often illness can seem to come on suddenly.
Sometimes this can be after we’ve led a relatively healthy life. We find ourselves saying “My life will always be this way”.
Or, we think “I can’t”. That living and certain activities are now impossible.
Oft times, we feel defeated thinking “It’s not worth it.” Since this diagnosis won’t go away then we live in defeat.

WHAT IS A CHRONIC ILLNESS
Chronic or long-term illness means having a disease for more than three months. This requires us to adjust to the demands of the illness and the clinical treatment of the condition. An example would be having cancer and the rounds of Chemotherapy.
There may be additional stresses, since chronic illness might change the way you live, see yourself and relate to others.
Chronic illnesses are mostly characterised by:
- complex causes
- many risk factors
- long latency periods (time between onset of the illness and feeling its effects)
- a long illness
- functional impairment or disability.
Most chronic illnesses do not fix themselves and are generally not cured completely. Some can be immediately life-threatening, such as heart disease and stroke. Others linger over time and need intensive management, such as diabetes. Most chronic illnesses persist throughout a person’s life but are not always the cause of death, such as arthritis.

HERE's THE TRUTH (WITH STORY)
James was in his late 60’s when he found out that he had been exposed to mold in his home of over 30 years.
Once the mold was discovered, he and his wife had to move. By then, it was too late. The mold had damaged his lungs. He now had an issue breathing. He needed surgery.
This was a catastrophe. Who would run their business? Where would they live while he got surgery and did rehab?
The truth of the matter is that this is a very hard subject.
Not everyone can understand what you’re going through during this period and that’s hard to feel misunderstood set apart from the rest of the world.
This is why support and a plan of action is so important. The plan of action will take you from a place of despair and defeat to a place of feeling empowered and decisive.
OUR VICTORY!
A clear example, where we had success is with one of our clients who was diagnosed with Guillain Barre.
She would have several spouts in which the Guillain Barre would return causing numbness and tingling as well as extreme fatigue limiting her ability to work, travel, and spend time with her family.
In the early days when her Guillain Barre occurred and she couldn’t even walk.
Through exercise, lifestyle education, and dietary changes, she was able to not only return to normal activities such as skiing and running, but also continue traveling for work.
